How to Turn Your LinkedIn Profile into a Tailored CV

Turn your LinkedIn profile into a tailored CV. Export if available, select relevant experience, rewrite it as evidence and verify dates and claims.

Key takeaways
  • Treat the profile as a record rather than a finished CV.

  • Use the export option only where it is available.

  • Choose experience against the actual vacancy.

  • Keep dates, titles and qualifications consistent.

  • Save the exact application version you submit.

Introduction

Use your LinkedIn profile as a record of experience, then select and rewrite that material for a particular vacancy. Downloading a profile PDF can help collect the information, but it does not automatically produce a focused application.

A profile may introduce you to several audiences over time. A CV has a narrower job: help one employer understand your fit for the role in front of you. The facts should agree across both, while the selection and emphasis can change.

Export the profile if the option is available

LinkedIn's Help Centre describes a desktop option to save a profile as a PDF. Open your profile and look in the introduction section for “More” or “Resources,” then “Save to PDF.” LinkedIn specifies an English profile and English language setting, and availability can vary by account. The feature is not available in its mobile app. These instructions were checked on 2 October 2026.

If the option is absent, copy your own relevant profile content into an editable document. You do not need to upload personal information to an unfamiliar conversion service simply to make a CV.

Whether you export or copy, review the content before using it. An old profile can contain out-of-date dates, unfinished projects or claims written for a different career target.

Select material against the vacancy

Read the essential requirements and identify the experiences that help demonstrate them. Give those entries space. Shorten or remove unrelated material rather than carrying your entire profile into the CV.

Keep an editable master record with the full history so you do not lose useful information. Create a separate application version for the role. This makes it easier to tailor responsibly without changing facts in the underlying record.

For example, a student applying for a data assistant role might expand a survey-analysis project and shorten an unrelated society activity. For a coordination role, the society responsibility might deserve more detail. Both CVs should preserve the actual dates and responsibilities.

Rewrite broad descriptions into evidence

“Interested in analytics and problem solving” describes an interest. It does not show what you have done. If you have a relevant project, explain it in terms of your contribution.

Here is an illustrative rewrite:

Profile-style wording: “Enjoy working with data and collaborating on research projects.”

CV project wording: “Checked incomplete survey responses and documented cleaning decisions for a coursework research project, giving the group a consistent record of how the analysis dataset was prepared.”

Use that pattern only with facts that match your experience. The stronger wording is useful because it specifies an action and output, not because it adds a bigger number or a more impressive title.

If an entry says “supported the team,” identify what support meant. Did you check records, draft updates, test a feature or prepare meeting notes? Remove any claim you cannot explain under follow-up questions.

Rebuild the document structure

Use headings suited to the vacancy: education, relevant experience, selected projects and skills are common starting points. Put your strongest relevant material early and keep the chronology clear within sections.

The exported profile's layout does not have to become your final CV layout. Check the employer's page limit and file instructions. Avoid carrying over social-profile material such as long personal introductions or lists of every course you have taken when they do not strengthen the application.

A professional profile link can provide additional context if it is up to date. The CV should still make sense without the employer opening it. Our guide to LinkedIn profiles for graduates and job seekers covers the profile itself.

Check consistency and privacy

Compare dates, qualification names, job titles and project status across the CV and profile. Tailoring does not justify promoting an assistant role to a manager title or describing a group result as your individual achievement.

Check what each attachment or upload will expose. Sending a CV with an application and placing it publicly on a profile are different actions. LinkedIn's help material distinguishes application uploads from public profile uploads; choose the route that matches your purpose.

Remove unnecessary personal information and confirm that any referee has agreed before you share their details. Reopen the final file and check its contact information, links and formatting.

Keep the submitted version

Save the exact CV used for each vacancy alongside the advert. That gives you a reliable starting point if an interviewer asks about a particular bullet. Update the master record when you complete new work, then decide where that evidence belongs in the next application.

The useful output is a CV whose selection makes sense for the role and whose claims you can support. A PDF export is simply one way to begin gathering the material.

Frequently asked questions

FAQs

Review it first. A profile export may help collect information, but you still need to select and structure evidence for the particular vacancy.

The official guidance describes a desktop feature with English-language conditions and variable member availability. Check the current help and your account; the mobile app is not the described export route.

Yes. The audience and purpose differ, so selection can change. Dates, titles, qualifications and the underlying facts should remain consistent.

No. Application uploads and public-profile uploads serve different purposes. Review the destination and visibility before sharing personal information.

Keep the exact submitted CV with the vacancy and date. Editing your master document later should not erase the record of what the employer received.
