IELTS Band & Target Checker

Calculate your overall IELTS band from your Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking bands, and check it against the score you need.

How your overall band is calculated

  1. Four section bands

Enter each band from 0 to 9 in half-band steps. Each section carries equal weight.

  2. The average

We add the four bands and divide by four. The method is the same for Academic and General Training.

  3. Rounding

Averages ending in .25 round up to the next half band, and .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

An example

Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0 and Speaking 6.0 add up to 25.

25 divided by 4 is an average of 6.25.

Overall band 6.5

An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band.

Common questions

Is this the same for IELTS Academic and General Training?

Yes. Both use the same method to turn four section bands into an overall band.

Can I enter Listening and Reading marks out of 40?

Convert them to bands first. The band for each raw mark comes from the official IELTS conversion.

Why check a minimum for each section?

Many university and visa requirements set a minimum for each section as well as an overall band. Check yours before you rely on the overall score.
